How to Choose Between High ISO and Slow Shutter Speed

October 18, 2018 By Good Glass Leave a Comment

When learning how to become a professional photographer, there are many things that picture-taking hopefuls need to take into consideration in order to get the best shot possible. One crucial differentiating factor is being able to choose the best option between a High ISO capture, or using a slower shutter speed in order to get the desired shot. Researching and identifying the use cases that are available for each functionality is crucial when taking pictures of different scenes.

Key Takeaways:

  • Mark Wallace from Adorama took up the challenge of taking shots in low lighting conditions. His initial ISO was 100 with 16 seconds of shutter speed.
  • On changing the ISO to 3200 and the shutter speed to second, the result was a noisy image at 100 percent.
  • After several trials, it was then decided that for static objects, shooting at a slower shutter speed and low ISO was better.

“High ISO introduces more noise in the image, whereas a slower shutter speed causes motion blur to show up. It?s up to you to make the decision for your photo, depending on the situation.”
