The Big Lie About Lifestyle Photography

Most photographers tend to gravitate towards candid photographs the capture their subjects in a natural environment. Although people think these in-between images are truly natural, the sad truth is that most of them are actually staged. Photographers will instruct their subjects to pose and give them directions, as this provides more interaction and success of the photo shoot. Also, the subjects tend to be happier when they are given direction, as the photo shoot seems more professional.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sometimes very talented lifestyle photographers do something which is a great disservice to struggling newbies in the field.
  • They convey in conversation, or perhaps in posting online, that they adore the serendipitous happenstance of just happening to catch a great life moment on film.
  • This frustrates the newbies that are not “catching” these moments. The truth is such moments are rarely “caught,” rather they are most carefully orchestrated.

“But thankfully I took a different approach and started being in control of my sessions 100% and I couldn’t believe the difference. I realized that I actually had to direct and pose my families exactly how I wanted them.”
